This is another application of using the adjusted “Strauss pocket.” My experience recording in the National Recital Hall indicated that recording a solo instrument in the hall could be a problem. Because the stage is not very deep, the solo instrument is usually very close to the piano, and the sound of piano seems too loud as an accompanying instrument.
I also tried to solve this problem by using the adjusted “Strauss pocket” micing style instead of setting close micing for the solo instrument. But this time, I used the cardio pair at a lower angle, allowing it to capture more direct sound of the violin than the piano. By this setting, I could record both the clear contour of the violin and the great accompaniment of the piano, and in this case, I didn’t really need to add extra reverb during mixing.
